My favorite part of this video is the older gentlemen at the end: “At first I was surprised.  But really, I saw people looking…you move…make spirit…people…it’s difficult for me to explain…Everybody’s happy.”  If you ask me, those last two words made the entire production totally worth it.  If by performing random acts of randomness makes “everybody happy”, how can you ever fail?

Let’s start brainstorming ways to introduce Improv Everywhere into the office.  Dressing up as Starbucks baristas and serving everyone in the sales meeting,  being mimes for a day (or maybe just half a day…not too sure how far that’d get us), deliver single flowers to every desk in the office.

PR – Production Request

Generated by the AE when any production work is required. The Production Request is found on the Application Center Dashboard and much pertinent info is maintained within this form, including your Spot Titles and P-Numbers. These are required for trafficking your production spots.

P-NUMBER (“Prod ID”) – Serial numbers corresponding to spots created from your Production Request.

All spots produced by your production will have a P-Number and is a serial number unique to every spot. The P-Number is assigned in the production process when the title of the spot is input to your Production Request form. P-Numbers are different in format depending on if the spot is Standard Definition (SD) or High Definition (HD).

Example: SD spot “P1234A” HD spot “PH1234A”

The P denotes Local production, If followed by an H means it’s a HD Spot, if there is no “H” it is a SD spot, the 4 digit number is the Production Request number and the letter (A, B, C,…) denotes multiple spots produced on that Production Request.

DV-MISC – Local ID for a spot that Production grabs from an outside vendor and will deliver to MC on their behalf.
*A spot coming from Production… but not produced by Production.

This category was created for all ancillary projects that must filter through Production – NOT requiring a Production Request. These should be ready-to-air spots. Production often takes in ads from clients needing help formatting their spots correctly – or downloading from another outside link, YouSendIt, or spots uploaded to Production’s Box.net site. We’ll grab these files even if there is no production needed – just to help the AE get spots by technically-challenged outside vendors on the air. So please use the Local ID “DV-MISC” for all of these miscellaneous spots.

DVLP – Denver Local Production. Outdated term no longer used.

File-based Spot – Electronic files that have been downloaded from outside sources.

File based spots are files that have been downloaded from outside sources, from production edit suites and sent to us on hard drives, DVD or other media storage devices. These spots contain full-resolution full-frame files in either HD or SD.

Note: Spots that have been saved on a DVD as a movie file (.mov) CANNOT be played like a regular DVD in a DVD player or computer, this DVD acts as a thumb drive or other media storage device. Production will need to convert for you.

FTP/ FTP Site/Box.net – File Transport Protocol. An FTP site is where large files can be sent and stored.

The preferred way for clients to send finished air-ready spots electronically is Master Control’s FTP site. The Local ID for this should be entered as MC-FTP. Please contact Tom Hall for technical standards and metadata form to forward to your client. A metadata form is simply a “cover sheet” attached to this electronic spot … like a fax cover sheet with titles and contacts.

Comcast firewall blocks us from accessing any external FTP sites (these look like ftp://…) so we often need to ask clients to upload spots to us.

Production maintains a similar site called Box.net (www.box.net) which is web-based instead. So we can move large files around without needing FTP software. Clients are welcome to use this site as an alternative to FTP for spots requiring Production – contact Kate for instructions to forward to your client.

MVL – Master Video Library

This list is generated by Master Control, based from Novar reports, and shows the spots that are not currently in the system – needed for the next day’s airing.

MCR – Missing Content Report.  A list of spot(s) that are currently unaccounted for from the MVL.

The MCR spreadsheet is emailed out daily by Master Control – this content prompts Production to transfer all spots to be aired the following day.  Production is looking for all missing spots listed under a LOCAL ID containing P-NUMBER or the only other Production code “DV-MISC”.MCR – Missing Content Report.  A list of spot(s) that are currently unaccounted for from the MVL.

AdManager – Production posts all spots to the AdManager – these are electronic files for Master Control to see and encode from.

Used for File-based commercial spots, both HD (Hi-Def) and SD (Standard Def). When a file-based spot is sent to Master Control, it is sent into the AdManager system. If the spot is HD it will then convert the spot into three files – an SD version for SD networks, a 720p HD version for 720p networks, and a 1080i HD version for 1080i networks. See below for graphic. If the spot is SD, it will also upconvert the spot to 720p and 1080i for the different networks. After AdManager finishes, a Master Control Operator will QC the spot before moving to their Ad Insertion system.

Note: It is VERY IMPORTANT to schedule an HD spot as HD. If you don’t, the system will convert your nice looking HD spot into SD and then use the SD spot to make HD spots. The quality will be degraded significantly and it will not air full-screen on HD.

BM – Code for HD content protection.

When a HD spot is scheduled by Traffic, a BM plus a 1, 7 , or 8 is added to the Spot ID to coincide the network specifications. A “BM1” for SD spots, “BM7” for HD 720p spots, and “BM8” for HD 1080i spots.

Client Number – Number created in Novar when a new client is generated.

Spot ID – Client Number + Cut Number

ISCI Code – An ISCI code is usually a set of 8 characters, the first four being alphabetic, and the remaining four being numeric, in the format ‘ABCD1234′ .

The alphabetical characters usually represent the advertiser (some examples are QWAN for Wells Fargo Bank, KOCL (and more recently CL) for Coca-Cola, and PEMX for Pepsi), and the numeric characters usually represent the spot itself, with different numbers used for either different spots, or different versions of the same spot.

Ad Copy / Spot Name – The title of the spot.

Ad Tag – Graphical information place that the end of a spot.

“Ad Tag / Ad Copy” means producing zone specific tag information on each respective spot.
Example: Logo, address. Phone number, web address, etc.

BluRay – Used for High Definition “HD” content , can also be used for optical disk storage.

DVD – Used for Standard definition “SD” content.

Note a HD spot put on a DVD will play in standard definition only), the DVD can also be used for optical disk storage of a file based HD spot but will not play in any players SD or HD.

ADN – Ad Distribution Network

This is a website where Comcast and network promotional spots can be downloaded.

Scope Creep – in project management, refers to uncontrolled changes in a project’s scope.

This phenomenon can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled. It is generally considered a negative occurrence that is to be avoided. Typically, the scope increase consists of either new products or new features of already approved product designs, without corresponding increases in resources, schedule, or budget. As a result, the project team risks drifting away from its original purpose and scope into unplanned additions. As the scope of a project grows, more tasks must be completed within the budget and schedule originally designed for a smaller set of tasks. Thus, scope creep can result in a project team overrunning its original budget and schedule.

Example:When a project comes in and is bid out at a certain amount, them the project increase in size and the bid amount stays the same.

Butterfly Effect – Change one thing, change everything.

A small change at one place in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere. Example: a butterfly flapping its wings in China might change the weather in Chicago. This metaphor is highly significant in our world as well.
